Why Fantasy?
Growing up, I have always loved the art of storytelling. No matter if it was in books, movies, tv shows, video games, professional wrestling (yes wrestling) - there is nothing like a great story. I remember seeing the animated film The Hobbit as a child and instantly falling in love with the Fantasy Genre.
As a storyteller, I was intrigued by the idea of generating a whole new world that doesn't exist. That meant there were no rules to restrain me. The only limits I faced was my imagination.
As I started to dive into fantasy, the one thing I noticed in many books and stories throughout the years was the standard format. There was an ancient evil rising from a place far beyond, and it was up to a chosen few or individual, to set off on a quest to destroy that evil. I still loved the majority of the fantasy books I read, but I realized something early. The books I liked the most had nothing to do with the uniqueness of the story but more so with particular characters that I grew to enjoy.
Another aspect of fantasy stories that has irked me over the past couple of years is how little fantasy goes into most of them. Fantasy should not be restrained by just having the traditional elves who are wise and physically superior to humans or orcs who are always evil. More so there are so many fantasy stories who neglect to have anything outside of human in the stories at all.
That is when I realized the things I grew to love about fantasy stories were also a bit outdated. I decided to craft my own world with my own rules. I wanted to tell a fantasy story that would be something I would want to read. That being said, I know it will be a bit different and maybe not something traditional fantasy readers will attach themselves to right away. I thought of a world rich in history and intrigue that spawned a plethora of unique and exciting characters. I then picked the characters I was most interested in following while they unlock mysteries of a brand new world. This series is not the story of good versus evil. Instead, it is the story of people and their journey to discover who they are as they decide what kind of world they want to live in.
